Introduction: Retirement, which means the cessation of a job role and the transition to a new stage of life, is a multidimensional phenomenon. Given the importance of job roles in modern societies, this transition has an impact on the social well-being of individuals. The experience of retirement is not uniform among different individuals. University faculty members report different experiences due to the professional and specialized nature of their jobs. A review of the literature on the subject of retirement in academics shows that the retirement path of these individuals is similar to the retirement of scientists. The present study was conducted with the aim of understanding the retirement experience of university professors.
Method: This study analyzed and systematically synthesized articles in this field using the meta-synthesis method.
Findings: After a careful review of the articles focusing on challenges and their management, the following conceptual themes were extracted: continuity of pre-retirement and post-retirement roles, phased retirement versus forced retirement, time reconstruction, unpleasant psychological experiences, changing interaction systems, identity crisis, and pre-retirement planning.
Discussion: The results of this study show that university faculty members experience a different retirement under the influence of their professional careers. Their challenges are influenced by the meaning they attribute to retirement, and the strategies for managing these challenges are also a reflection of the continuing effects of their professional careers. This experience is influenced both by social structures and individual agency that is a result of their profession.
