Introduction
The family, functioning as an intermediary institution between the individual and society, comprises members bound by intimate relationships. It both influences and is influenced by societal dynamics and the surrounding environment. Family health, a cornerstone of individual and collective well-being, serves as a critical indicator of societal health. A healthy family fosters the development of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, while its absence correlates with behavioral and psychological issues such as addiction, crime, depression, anxiety, and delinquency (Oref, 2018, p. 12). Individuals raised in healthy families exhibit higher levels of emotional support, self-efficacy, and problem-solving capabilities compared to those from dysfunctional environments (Ahmadi et al., 2021).
Health transcends biological factors, encompassing sociofamilial conditions that shape disease prevention and health maintenance. As a prerequisite for fulfilling social roles, health enables individuals to engage fully in societal activities, thereby enhancing productivity and efficiency (Panahi et al., 2022, p. 8). Family health is characterized by interdependent relationships governed by mutual respect, affection, and role adherence, fostering satisfaction, moral well-being, and opportunities for growth. Key dimensions of family health span individual, familial, and societal spheres. Challenges such as rising divorce rates, addiction, delayed marriages, and globalization-driven shifts in familial models—particularly the postmodern transformation of family structures in Western societies—threaten traditional frameworks (Behnam, 2013, p. 23).
Noorabad Mamsani City, located in Fars Province, Iran, has experienced significant socio-cultural transformations, particularly within family structures. With Fars Province ranking 18th nationally in divorce rates, Noorabad Mamsani recorded 214 divorces in 2021, a 15.7% increase from the previous year (Statistical Center of Iran, 2022). The rise in non-traditional :union:s, such as cohabitation (“white marriage”), challenges Islamic values and familial stability. These trends underscore the urgency of examining family health and its socio-structural determinants to inform interventions.
Method
This qualitative study employed a grounded theory approach to analyze familial health dynamics in Noorabad Mamsani City (May 2023). Purposive and theoretical sampling ensured maximum diversity among participants, prioritizing depth over generalizability. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, with data analyzed through open, axial, and selective coding. Validation involved peer review by academic supervisors and participant verification to ensure credibility.
Findings
Causal conditions influencing family health include reduced expectations, material security, and emotional stability. Unrealistic familial expectations exacerbate contemporary challenges, aligning with Nystrom et al. (2015) and Falih (2019), who emphasize synergy between family health dimensions and societal productivity. Security—material, psychological, and spiritual—emerged as pivotal, reinforcing Giddens’ (2021) assertion that families act as protective frameworks fostering trust and resilience (p. 65).
Discussion
Consequences of family health encompass psychological, social, and moral outcomes. Shared efforts in livelihood, education, and justice-based roles, alongside empathy and collective belonging, strengthen familial bonds. Conversely, economic pressures correlate with marital instability and behavioral disorders, as evidenced by Kanger and Elder’s (1990) linkage of financial strain to familial disintegration (p. 653). Cultivating normative and religious values that prioritize emotional connectivity and universalist ethics is critical to sustaining family health. This study highlights the interplay of socio-economic, cultural, and psychological factors in shaping family health. Addressing these determinants through policy and cultural initiatives is essential to mitigating risks and fostering resilient familial structures in Noorabad Mamsani and analogous contexts.
