Introduction: One of the most common childhood disorders is depression which researchers have emphasized on identifying the related factors in childhood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the predictability of depression based on social support and cognitive factors in orphaned children.
Method: a descriptive correlational analysis was used in this study. The statistical population consisted of all 1120 children in Tehran Wellbeing Centers (1120 children aged 7-12 years) in 79 centers in 1396, of whom 545 were selected by convenience sampling. The research tools included the Cox Child Depression Questionnaire (1992), the Children’s Attributional Style Questionnaire, the Dysfunctional Attitude-Child Questionnaire, the Children’s Cognitive Triangulation Questionnaire, and the Social Support Questionnaire used by providing ethics principles of research.
Findings: The results showed that among the cognitive factors, attributional styles, dysfunctional attitude, and cognitive triangle were significant predictors for children’s depression. It was also found that social support was also a significant predictor of children’s depression.
Discussion: These findings mean that the role of social support along with cognitive factors should be given special attention in explaining the pathological origins of depression in children, especially children who do not have a coherent family structure.
