Abstract
Intorduction: Orphaned and vulnerable children and adolescents residing in welfare centers require special support and attention because of inadequate living conditions and diverse adversities they experience. Education is a pivotal element in improving the well-being, health, and prospects of this group of children and adolescents and is capable of bolstering their proficiency. The current study examined the distinct educational requirements of orphaned and vulnerable children and adolescents residing in welfare centers.
Method: This study used an interpretive approach and qualitative methodology. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The sampling process was conducted purposefully and with maximum diversity, resulting in the participation of 45 individuals categorized into three main groups: orphaned and vulnerable children and adolescents residing in welfare centers, the managers and trainers working at these centers, and professionals in fields related to the research question.
Findings: This study identifies two main themes regarding the educational needs of children and adolescents in residential care. The first theme centers on addressing the gap between current and desired educational outcomes. This theme encompasses two key areas: knowledge-based needs and skill-based needs. Knowledge-based needs involve civic education to empower youth as active citizens, while skill-based needs focus on interpersonal, technical, and self-regulation skills crucial for independent living and workforce readiness. The second theme highlights the educational needs from the perspective of children and adolescents' own interests and desires. It emphasizes the importance of sports and arts programs not only for recreation but also for promoting mental health, social skills, self-expression, and creativity.
 Discussion: The study demonstrated that orphaned and vulnerable children and adolescents living in welfare centers have varying educational needs that require customized support tailored to their specific situations. The paper concludes with suggestions for improving the educational outcomes of this particular group.
