Introduction: Strain Theories, which are rooted in Durkheim's concept of anomie, have been depicted in cinema more than any other criminological theory. Movies, as one of the most important and richest sources of popular culture and criminology, have been able to display the emotional, affective, and hidden dimensions of crime well by using their capabilities and methods, including comprehensive descriptions. This research will analyze the causes of Mahin Ghadiri's serial murders through the lens of the Talakhoon camera, as one of the important sources of popular culture.
Method: This research will be conducted with the general theoretical framework of popular criminology and the method of cinematic semiotics. Cinematic semiotics deals with the interpretation and meaning-finding of films by using specific rules of general semiotics, including referential and implicit connotation.
Findings: The results of the present study show that committing a crime can be caused by strain at the individual and social levels, which is the result of feelings of inequality, deprivation, and anger, which is referred to in academic criminology as the General Strain Theory. Revenge is also a concept that plays a key role in this process.
Discussion: Cinema, with its unparalleled art and by presenting a comprehensive image of crime and criminal in the Strain theory, often makes the criminal not only an ordinary person in the eyes of the audience, but also a sympathetic person. Talakhoon As a cinematic work, and by showing the obvious and hidden dimensions of the life of the film's main character, while explaining the General Strain Theory, it plays an important role in reinterpreting the complex causes of Mahin Ghadiri's serial murders.
